Great Bustards in Winter
 Sadly the Great Bustards on Salisbury plain were not featured on the BBC's Snow Watch, however it's still worth watching if you didn't catch it on Wednesday on the BBC iPlayer.

The first wild Great Bustard chicks in the UK for 177 years!
This summer two adult female Great Bustards hatched and fledged chicks on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire.

Great Bustards at the Hawk Conservancy Trust
A memorandum of cooperation has just been signed by the Great Bustard Group and the Hawk Conservancy Trust. The two organisations have come together to produce the UK’s only Great Bustard aviary and to have it on public display. The GBG also have information about the Great Bustard and their work in Russia and the UK on display alongside the birds.
The aviary houses two male Great Bustards. The oldest was given to the GBG by Belgian authorities after a large illegal bird collection was discovered and confiscated. A genetic study revealed this bird to have Spanish origins and it is believed to be 20 years old and has always lived in captivity. The second bird is one the GBG reared in Russia in 2004, but before it could be released into the wild in the UK it suffered a bad injury to its shoulder, which prevents the wing fully opening. Neither of these birds are able to exist in the wild in the UK.
This is the first time the GBG has been able to display captive birds to the public, and gives the project a new and much needed public window.

 GBG publish new Bustard Studies
A new volume of the journal series Bustard Studies concerning research of all Bustard species has just been published by the GBG. Bustard Studies Vol.7 contains the proceedings of a conference organised and hosted by the GBG titled Great Bustards: Conservation through nest management and rear and release methods.

A visit by Mark Avery
 GBG recently hosted a visit by Dr Mark Avery, RSPB's Conservation Director and Andy Evans, head of Species Recovery for RSPB. The meeting was very positive and ideas are now being discussed to find ways for GBG and RSPB to work together for the Great Bustard, both in the UK and Russia.
